Dust Jacket Illustration - The Dragon’s Vice
A mockup showing the dust jacket illustration for my original concept story “The Dragon’s Vice”.
This dust jacket illustration completes the set begun with Bazaar of Bargains and City Heist, continuing the same young man character (the thief) and his dragon, Greed, into a full wraparound design.
The focus here was on creating a continuous illustration that reads seamlessly across front and back cover - from character portrait to dragon’s tail and treasure hoard - while still holding impact when viewed as individual panels. I carried over the sandstone textures and architectural motifs from the endpapers to unify the series, while expanding into a wider desert night setting with a distant cityscape.
Colour and light were central: the warm golds of Greed and the treasure contrast with the deep purples and blues of the night sky, tying the palette together in a way that feels both rich and atmospheric. Careful attention went into balancing detail across the composition in order to make the illustration feel immersive, without overcrowding the design.
This project also allowed me to demonstrate consistency of character across multiple illustrations, adapting the same figure into different contexts and scales while keeping his design recognisable.
